Beyond Limits 5: Wheeling through the Fiery Desert of Gobi

Join us for Beyond Limits 5 | Wheeling through the Fiery Desert of Gobi, happening in July 2023!

This is Beyond Expeditions' 5th charity expedition. This time, we're heading back into the great Gobi Desert in the heat of summer to raise much-needed funds for people with disabilities; specifically, SPD!

Registration is now open and we’re looking for physically, sensory and developmentally disabled warriors and like-minded expedition-ers who believe in our cause for supporting the potential of the physically disabled. We’re capping it at 25 participants total, read on to find out more!

We know that there’s so much more potential to unlock from within.

So let’s keep trekking with them, as they live beyond their disability.

We began breaking limits back in 2018, our first charity trek bringing us and cancer warriors to brave the heat of Gobi Desert. This summer, we once again return to the 50°C blaze of the desert for the 5th edition of Beyond Limits in July, 2023. But guess what? Something’s different this time.

Well… two things, to be exact. Having trekked for and with cancer warriors for 3 out of 5 charity expeditions, we are once again shifting gears this summer towards another cause we deeply believe in; supporting people with disabilities. Specifically, SPD.

But here’s the second catch; we are going in with a 7-9kg car tyre. Keep on reading, we’ll explain why later in the article.

For now, we have something more important to share first.

This will not be an easy expedition, and it is not for everyone. We greatly prioritise the makeup of the team, and thus go through a strictly selective process to ensure we honour the meaning of why we do the expedition in the first place. So, before you say yes to this edition of Beyond Limits, read on to find out if this expedition is for you.

Are you a good fit for this charity expedition?

Beyond Limits charity expeditions are not for everyone. We want our participants’ experience to be challenging because of the nature of the expedition, and less so because of the people. So here are several factors you should align with, to know if you are a good fit for the Beyond Limits experience!

  • Even though we have a well-planned itinerary, changes will be made during the trip itself due to unexpected circumstances.

So, if you're not ready to embrace change, then maybe Netflix is a better option than this expedition. If you're open to embracing the unknown, then we think you'll fit right in.

  • Simply put, don’t be ‘toxic’, if we could be Gen-Z with you.

Every team member’s well-being is priority. Period. We work hand-in-hand to ensure we complete the expedition together. We're all about teamwork and supporting one another because we want everyone to have an awesome time, so we need people who are kind, caring, and drama-free. Leave the diva attitude at home, and let's focus on having a positive and fun experience together!

  • There may be instances where cars break down, or weather conditions take a turn for the worse. Regardless, the country’s locals know the land like the back of their hand, and have kept our team safe throughout the years. We love and respect the people of the land we visit, and we trust them to show us the ropes.

If you can't trust the locals, then maybe you should stay home and watch a travel show instead! But, if you're down to learn from and trust the people who know the land best, then you'll feel right at home.

  • For this expedition, we will appoint team leaders within the group to lead each small ‘pod’ (3-4 members each).

Your team leader is there to ensure the well-being of you and your respective team members, working hand in hand with our overall-in-charge, Scott, to ensure everyone’s safety and the expedition runs smoothly. So, if you're the type of person who likes to go rogue, then this might not be the adventure for you.

So, if you're ready to step out of your comfort zone and create some amazing memories, then come join us! Bring your sense of humor, your willingness to learn, and your positive energy, and let's make a difference together.

We want Beyond Limits 5 to support them to live BEYOND their disabilities.

A disability can be heavy. Whether physical, developmental or sensory, disabilities pose great challenges to their employment opportunities, their personal development and even their day-to-day activities. It’s crazy, the way a disability can alter a life so significantly. Everything changes. But yet, these people refuse to be constrained, never allowing their physical, mental or sensory disability to create any lack in their lives. They carry weighty loads on their backs due to their disability, but they never back off from each challenge that comes by. They march on, living beyond the limits their disabilities bring to them.

So, Beyond Limits 5 is a charity expedition that will help both you and us raise much-needed funds to further support our disabled warriors to reach their fullest potential, because we also refuse to let their disabilities define who they can truly be.

In 2021, we successfully rallied a team of 8 expedition-ers, including 2 cancer survivors and 3 expedition-ers with physical disabilities for Beyond Limits 3. Our team completed a 72km wheelchair trek around Singapore, battling 3 consecutive days of fatigue, burning heat and blistering sores as they travelled coast-to-coast. TWICE. We raised $24,000 for SPD, a huge win for us all!

But this time, we want more. More people to join us. More support and awareness for our cause. More funds raised. So that we create a WAY bigger impact on people with disabilities in Singapore. Join our charity expedition to help raise much-needed funds that will go towards further supporting SPD’s programmes and services; let’s create change and help them better integrate into society. They are part of us too.

You will be tyre-d.

Every charity expedition-er who joins us will be pulling along a tyre as we trek across the unforgiving heat of the Gobi desert. We wanted an element to this charity trek that symbolises the 'weight' of hardships that people with disabilities face on a daily basis. Trekking through the scorching hot Gobi desert with the additional load of a tyre is our way of relaying hope, love and encouragement to people with disabilities. We want to show our fellow friends that we see them. We see their struggles, we see the battles they fight to win each day and we want to journey with them and the weight of every challenge tied along to their disability. Their lives shall not hit the brakes simply because of the weight of their disability.

This added element of trekking with a tyre, also embodies our alignment with SPD’s vision; “To build an inclusive community where everyone is part of it, not apart from it.” Let’s go beyond simply donating to the cause we believe in. Let’s get on the ground and journey with them.

How exactly will our funds be used to assist SPD in their mission?

SPD’s mission is a commitment to working in partnership with people with disabilities to develop their potential to the fullest so they can be self-reliant and independent. All participants are asked to fundraise a minimum of SGD$5,000 with GIVE.asia, with 100% of the funds going directly to SPD. Our funds will support them in these few ways;

So, are you ready to feel the difference?

Are you ready to join Beyond Limits 5 in our mission to support our fellow friends with disabilities? If the cause for this charity expedition resonates for you, come trek with us and our tyres. We look forward to taking on the heat of the desert with you on these dates of the summer; 1st-11th July, 2023. Registration is now open, with a cap of only 25 participants. Fill this form up to be a charity expedition-er with us! Let’s blaze forth for the impact SPD can create for the disabilities they serve.

What limits are you willing to break through, to serve the cause you truly believe in?

When our founder, Scott, lost his grandfather to cancer, he found his compelling vision; raising awareness and funds to support underprivileged cancer warriors. This vision led him to embark on his first solo expedition in 2017. Taking on a challenging 800km trek across Mongolia, Scott raised an incredible amount of $8,630 from 67 samaritans. He continued to conquer many incredible charity expeditions ever since then, charging forth with a burning passion to challenge his limits and garner support for the causes he believe in.

Scott’s ferocious pursuit of his vision reminds us that “all breakthroughs start with a change in your beliefs”. Beyond Limits was birthed in the heat of his vision, and it’s been running on a high ever since Scott established it back in 2018 with 18 other passionate expedition-ers, including 4 cancer survivors.

“We have brought many on their first charity trek, creating opportunities for people to embark on intensely meaningful expeditions and fundraising efforts. And now, we also want Beyond Limits to inspire you to break through your own beliefs. What is a cause you truly believe in, a cause that fires you up to a whole new level of intensity and focus? What kind of impact greatly excites you when you think of achieving it? Hold on to that vision. Listen to how it speaks to the core of who you are, and let your passion move you towards doing whatever it takes to create the impact you truly want to see.”

“Beyond Limits is the essence of living out who we believe we are.

Ask yourself, what limits do you have? And when did you decide to accept these limitations you created for yourself?

How can we break through the concrete boundaries we’ve boxed ourselves in? Simple: an extremely compelling vision.

Once you have that, it’s all crystal clear. No what ifs, no excuses, no blaming others. Because that’s when you rise to a different level of intensity and focus. Where all your shoulds (regrets), have now become your musts. When challenges come your way, you will find a way, if not, you are going to make a way. That’s when the real you shows up. And you will never be able to hide that extreme level of spontaneity and excitement that you burn so passionately with, every moment of your life.

All breakthroughs start with a change in your beliefs.

So... what beliefs do you represent?”

— SCOTT TAY, BE FOUNDER
